How Does a Halotherapy (Salt Therapy) Work?

Halotherapy, also known as dry Salt Therapy is a holistic approach that mimics the microclimate of a salt cave. Dry salt air is dispersed into an enclosed environment (bed, booth) through a unique process generated by halogenerator. This type of treatment is a safe and effective way of using salt's natural antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and super absorbent

properties to provide relief for respiratory and skin conditions.

When you heat salt, it maintains a dry and kinetically active state. This heated and dry pure sodium chloride is then crushed into micro-sized particles and dispersed into the air in an environment where you are inhaling the fresh salt air. When micro-particles of dry salt are inhaled into the respiratory system, they absorb and remove allergens, toxins and foreign substances in your lungs and throughout your respiratory tract. Salt also reduces any inflammation and opens airway passages making it easier to breath.

When Should you not Seek Halotherapy Treatment?

Halotherapy is known as a safe and natural treatment. Clients who have any serious health conditions or women who are pregnant should always seek medical advice from a doctor. Halotherapy for people who have the following conditions, should also seek medical advice from their doctor.

  • Infections associated with a fever
  • Contagious diseases
  • Respiratory System Cancers
  • Tuberculosis
  • Cardiac disease patients
  • Acute respiratory disease
  • Severe hypertension
  • Chronic obstructive lung diseases
  • Intoxication

Are There Any Side Effects?

Normally there are no side effects. Some people might experience a scratchy throat or a tickle in their sinuses. Others who might be slightly more sensitive could experience a minor skin irritation, which tends to go away after a session or two. For those who experience a slight cough, this is a sign that the salt therapy is effectively working. The body is loosening and releasing all the mucous buildup.

What Kind of Salt is Used?

99.99% pure sodium chloride (Pharmaceutical grade salt). It contains no fillers or caking agents. It does come from a natural source but it is naturally processed to remove all of its impure elements. It’s the same salt that hospitals in Eastern Europe use in their salt rooms as well as the same salt used in all of the research that Halotherapy has been conducted on. We do not recommend Himalayan or sea salt as it is not stripped of all the impurities. There could be dirt, clay or some type of debris that could be harmful to the lungs. It’s very healthy for the digestive system but not for the respiratory system.

Are there any Contraindictations?

No. However, because Halotherapy has a detoxifying effect by releasing toxins and bacteria from the body, you may want to get medical advice from your doctor if you are taking prescribed medications.

How Many Sessions/Times Per Week are Necessary?

Every experience is different, and it depends on the type and severity of your condition. For respiratory and skin conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, allergies and psoriasis people can complete 2 to 3 sessions a week for 4 to 8 weeks. Again, it does depends on the severity of the condition. You may feel some improvement after a single session, but a series of treatments is required to achieve long-term results. Some people use treatments as a preventative measure to avoid the common cold, and other respiratory viruses.

What Results can I Expect?

As a result of Salt Therapy, the condition of compromised bronchia is restored, breathing becomes easier and quality / function of breathing improves. This facilitates the normalization of other bodily systems. Due to a fortified immune system, “sick days” will decrease and you will become more resilient. In cases of asthma and croup, the inflammation causing spasms of the bronchus / windpipe will cease and the passage of air through the bronchial tubes will normalize, leading to the end of attacks.  If you have asthma, allergies and other bronchial issues you may see some amazing results in a short period of time. Breathing becomes easier and you'll experience more energy. After receiving Salt Therapy treatments, your respiratory issues and lung function will vastly improve. In addition, those who have skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema or acne have also had incredible improvements in the health of their skin.

What will I Experience in the Salt Booth/Bed?

Salt Therapy is a relaxing, peaceful and rejuvenating experience. You are surrounded by the fine salt particles and negative ions created in the air. Sometimes people detect a subtle and pleasant salt taste on their lips. It’s a place where you can sit back and experience the salt treatment in a very peaceful and non-stressful setting.

What Should I Wear During Salt Therapy?

Comfortable clothing (most people just wear street clothes). The salt air will not harm your clothing, nor leave a noticeable residue. If you are coming for skin conditions, we recommend you wear shorts and T shirt, to expose as much of the affected area as possible.  Do not wear perfume before or during the therapy, as many of our clients are allergic to them or have sensitivity to the scents.

How About "Picking Up Germs" in a Salt Booth/Bed?

Simply stated, salt absorbs bacteria. Salt is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory.  A stable hypoallergenic, hypo bacterial environment is maintained in the therapeutic room. If somehow any bacteria entered the room during a session and was not eliminated by the salt being disbursed in the room, it would be removed during the ventilation time, which follows each Salt Therapy session and would exit the building via ducting.
